Boston Man Denied Heart Transplant Because Of COVID-19 Vaccination Status
A 31 year-old male, father of two, was taken off the donor list for heart transplant because of COVID-19 vaccination status. The medical staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital unanimously concluded that the risk of severe disease from COVID-19 because of immune compromise post surgery/recovery, and immune suppressive drugs, were too high to ignore. A caveats need to be considered.
You see, two things can be true at once. First, you can disagree with a patients vaccination status. Second, it is morally and ethically reprehensible to deny them a transplant solely based on their decision to abstain from such a treatment. This does not equate to denying a patient with liver cirrhosis a transplant because they continue to drink alcohol.
