UPDATE: Damar Hamlin's Doctors Give An Update To The Press On His Current Condition — "it’s too early to say it was commotio cordis"
Drs Fritz and Knight gave an update on Damar’s condition. They say, Damar has made “substantial improvement in his condition” in the past 24 hours after his cardiac arrest on the field. The doctors continued, “as of this morning he is awake, with intact neurological condition”. His doctors also stated, “he continues to be critically ill in the ICU”, and remains “unable to communicate with us is writing, or verbally” (because of breathing tube).
Questions From The Press
Reporter 1: What caused his cardiac arrest, something pre-existing?:
Drs Fritz & Knight: “We do not have answers as to why he arrested, tests are on going.”
Reporter 2: Do you expect him to make a full recovery?
Drs Fritz: “I can not comment on whether he will make a full recover or not, we are not sure”.
Reporter 3: What are you looking to see next as he makes a recovery?
Dr Fritz: “We want to get him to breath on his own, that’s the next milestone for him”
Reporter 4: Will he be able to play professional football again?
Dr Fritz: “It’s too early to have that conversation, he’s still critically ill in the ICU on a ventilator, he has to come off the vent first.”
Reporter 5: Did Damar experience commotio cordis?
Dr Fritz: “That is incredibly rare, commotio cordis remains a diagnosis of exclusion, we have to rule other more like things out before a diagnosis like that. Further testing will reveal an answer, but it’s too early to say it was commotio cordis.”
